(The curtain opens with the Throne Room set...only this time, people are clearing the area to prepare for the big Court Ball, complete with long tables filled with food, a dance floor, and a stage. Part of the set rolls out to reveal Queen Valeria's room. Maxine attends to Valerie, who wears an elaborate golden gown with lots of loose silk drapery that allows room for her pregnancy.)
Maxine: (As she puts a golden, topaz-and-diamond-trimmed tiara on Valerie's head) There. You look gorgeous, Your Majesty.
Valerie: Thank you, Maxina. (She turns behind her. Her room looks more like a slumber party than a Queen's dressing chambers. Jenny brushes Daphne's hair. The Angellettes fuss with their jewelry. Emma just lays on the bed, staring at the ceiling.)
Audrey: Win, my tiara's crooked!
Winnie: How would I know how to get a tiara right? The only one I've ever seen before was in "Breakfast at Tiffany's!"
Valerie: The rest of you really need to get ready. (Smiles) After all, this is a rather important ball.
Lillian: (Adds more bangle bracelets) That's right! We're gonna choose suitors!
Valerie: (Frowns at Emma) Emily? Em, are you all right?
Emma: Huh? (Sighs) Just thinking.
Kimberly: (As she comes in, carrying piles of gowns) Is she still laying around?
Audrey: She's been like that ever since she got back from Lone Star Town!
Kimberly: (Drops the dresses on the bed) I wanna hear more about that! (Plops next to Daphne) I heard you guys were rescued by the White Knight and his apprentice and their men!
Lillian: How romantic!
Daphne: Yes, we were!
Kimberly: What are they like?
Lillian: Are they really as handsome and mysterious as everyone says?
Daphne: Definitely mysterious.
Audrey: Do they really just appear outta nowhere and help the innocent?
Daphne: They seemed to.
Valerie: (Frowns) I wonder. Those men who rescued me a few weeks ago didn't tell me who they were. (Thoughtful) The White Knight...he and his men must have been my rescuers, too.
Lillian: Oooh, I want the White Knight to rescue ME!
Maxine: (Nods at Emma) Emily, did you see the White Knight when he rescued you?
Emma: Huh?
Maxine: Daphne, how long has Emily been like this? (She waves her hand at the daydreaming woman)
Daphne: Ever since the White Knight kissed her.
Lillian: He KISSED her? (All of the women gather around Emma)
Emma: Uh-huh.
Valerie: How exciting!
Audrey: What was it like?
Maxine: How did he do it?
Lillian: Was it really romantic?
*Daphne chuckles.*
Mrs. Marion: (As she enters in a long purple silk gown, carrying her usual staff and ball and wearing her purple Talisman) Ladies, ladies! Give the poor girl some air!
Audrey: Lady Barria!
Maxine: You said you were going to help us dress for the ball tonight!
Valerie: All of my ladies await your magic to help them capture the eye of the court's finest gentlemen.
Mrs. Marion: (Grins) And I can't do it if you're all bunched around Lady Emily like that. (The girls all separate sheepishly)
Jenny: (Holds out one of the dresses, a plain blue gown) I guess it's not very fancy.
Audrey: We're just Guards, not noblewomen!
Mrs. Marion: I can take care of that. (Smiles) Each of you imagine yourself dressed in the finest gown you can think of, dancing in the arms of your true love. (Nods at the young woman who still lays on the bed) You too, Lady Emily. I can't work my magic if you're asleep!
Emma: Very well. (She stands joins Daphne)
("The Girl That I Knew Somewhere" begins as Mrs. Marion walks up and down the line, "inspecting" the girls. Valerie watches with interest.)
(She begins with the Angellettes. She smiles and waves her staff over all three of them at once. There's a poof of purple smoke and light around them. When it subsides, they wear their gowns from the Southland sequence of "Monkees In Wonderland." They hug each other and admire their dangling earrings and bracelets.)
(Mrs. Marion smiles at gentle, slightly afraid Jenny. She slowly waves her staff around Jenny. There's a purple poof around her. When it subsides, she wears a simple but elegant blue gown with a soft tulle underskirt and understated silver and sapphire jewelry. She has a silver comb in her long hair.)
*Jenny's eyes widen. She grins and twirls around, beaming.*
(Mrs. Marion next comes to Maxine. She waves her staff around her. There's a purple light and a poof of smoke. When it subsides, Maxine now wears a pink gown trimmed with sequins on the overskirt and a layered ruffled underskirt. She has gold and pink tourmaline jewelry in her upswept hair. She jumps up and down, showing off her Mary-Jane-style pink heels with sequin trim.)
(Mrs. Marion turns to the slightly skeptical Kimberly. She waves her arms around her. When the light and smoke subsides, Kim wears a pale green gown trimmed with fake daisies and flowery lace and sequins. She has a crown of real daisies with emeralds in her hair, and a necklace with a crystal pendant in the shape of a daisy.)
*Kimberly jumps up and down, clapping gleefully.*
(Emma just shakes her head and crosses her arms. Mrs. Marion sighs and waves her staff over the very skeptical young woman. There's the purple light and smoke, and when it subsides, Emma wears a deep red gown trimmed with ruffles and brown lace, her brown curls swept back into a small bun with a tortoiseshell comb, leaving enough hair to fall softly over her shoulders. Emma smiles with satisfaction.)
(As the song ends, Mrs. Marion finally arrives at Daphne. She gently rests her ball and staff on the girls' shoulder.)
Mrs. Marion: You...you already have a suitor, don't you? You want to look extra-special for him. He's not any ordinary member of the court.
Emma: (Raises her eyebrows) Really? Is that the person you've been meeting in the Rose Garden?
Daphne: *blushes* Yes, it is.
Mrs. Marion: (Pulls back) We'll need a masterpiece for a woman who is already in love. (She waves her staff around Daphne. We get more purple light and a large poof of smoke, along with some sparkles. When it subsides, Daphne is dressed in dazzling white. She wears a white tulle gown with net trim around the bodice and crystal-trimmed silk and net-trimmed overskirts. Her black hair is on her shoulders, pulled back with a silver and diamond tiara. She wears a diamond necklace with matching earrings.)
Emma: Oh Daphne, you look stunning!
Daphne: *jaw drops* WOW!
Mrs. Marion: And take a look at your feet! The finishing touch!
Daphne: *checks her feet* Glass slippers!
Valerie: (She curtsies as well as she can in front of Daphne) Maid Daphne, your beauty outshines even your Queen tonight!
Daphne: *blushes again* Thank you, Your Majesty.
Mrs. Marion: Oh, and one more thing. (She waves her staff again. There's another poof, and feather-and-sequin-trimmed masks on sticks appear in each woman's hand) These add an air of mystery.
Valerie: (Smiles) And now that we're all dressed and ready, shall we go to the ball?
Mrs. Marion: I'll take us there. (Mrs. Marion waves her staff again. There's a huge poof of purple smoke...and all of the women disappear as the Queen's Chambers set rolls off and we cut over to the Throne Room, now the Ball Room. Couples dance to the tune of "She." Nyles and Jessie stand near the door as couples come in, looking bored. Jessie wears a dark blue velvet gown over a blue satin underskirt, trimmed with blue crystals and sequins. She wears the Sapphire Talisman and Dagger and has a gold and sapphire tiara in her blond hair.)
Jessie: (To Nyles, who wears a wide-shouldered red jacket and red cape with short tan trousers) How did we get stuck with working Security? I'd rather be out there dancing and eating with you.
Nyles: *shrugs* Because we were told to.
*Lauren and Emilio enter next. They glance over the crowd, stopping near Nyles and Jessie.*
Jessie: (Bows before Lauren, admiring her simple gown of dark purple satin and amethyst jewels) Hello, Lady Lauren, (nods at Emilio in his bright red velvet cape and tunic and flowing yellow silk shirt and silk trousers and brown boots) Lord George. We haven't seen anything out of the ordinary so far tonight. (She leans over Lauren and whispers) So, is that Micky, or is he still recovering?
Lauren: *whispers back* He's still recovering.
Emilio: *nods* Good. Keep your eyes peeled, though.
Jessie: Yes, Lord George. (Frowns) But how do you peel your eyes? Wouldn't that be kind of gross?
*Lauren sighs and tugs Emilio away as he snickers.* ;)
Jessie: (Makes a face and turns to Nyles) I'm bored. I'm sure the White Knight ain't gonna try anything here, and even if he does, how could two minutes away from the door hurt? We'll just run over and get some food from the buffet, then run back. They'll never know we were gone.
Nyles: *nods* Fine by me!
(As they walk over to the buffet tables, we see our next guests. Mike, Davy, and the Martians walk in, wearing the costumes they wore as the enchanted Lords in the end of "Dream World." The Martians wear similar costumes - John has red, Marcus yellow, Danny green, and Chris a lighter shade of blue than Davy. All wear silk masks and carry their staffs and swords.)
Mike: Ok guys, spread out. Make sure you ain't seen when you filch the jewelry and money.
Chris: Can we dance with some of these fine ladies, too? After all, the members of the Court choose their suitors tonight!
Mike: You may dance with whomever you choose. Just don't get too caught up in it. Remember, we're here to play, steal jewelry, and find out what Lord George is doing to the King, not for a party.
Danny: You're such a killjoy, Mike.
John: Look! (Points to the other side as Cory of the Jolly Green Giants, dressed in a green tunic with a pale yellow silk undershirt and lots of green crystal jewels, comes out with a scroll)
Cory: (Opens the scroll) Announcing their Royal Highnesses, King Peter and Queen Valeria, and their Court!
(Peter and Valerie enter the room. Peter wears a dark green tunic with a white satin undershirt and tight trousers...and his usual beads in green and yellow. He also wears his fringed boots, a green velvet cape trimmed with yellow fur, and a golden crown set with emeralds and topaz. He and Valerie both carry matching emerald-and-topaz-trimmed scepters. The girls trail behind them, holding their masks to their faces. Mrs. Marion and her staff and ball bring up the rear.)
Peter: (As he and Valerie make their way to the thrones; Cory and Bobby place pillows on the thrones) Thank you, Corimand and Robert. (Stands; Emilio and Lauren join them on either side. Valerie glares at Lauren) And now, we will allow the festivities to begin! All eligible maids and gentlemen may come to the floor and choose a suitor for the first dance.
(Several young men, including all three Jolly Green Giants, crowd around Daphne. Emma also has several older noblemen suitors in tunics and jewels.)
*Daphne, however is scanning the crowd for someone else.*
Peter: (To Emilio) The lovely maid in the white gown is especially popular with the young men. The only woman I have seen whose beauty rivals hers is my own fair Valeria. (He smiles and takes Valerie's hand. She smiles back and squeezes it)
Emilio: And it appears she has a tough choice in front of her.
Mike: (As he, Davy, and the Martians make their way into the ballroom) Ok, boys, spread out. Choose your partners carefully. (Sees Emma with several older gentlemen) And I think I just found mine.
John: (Goes to Maxine and bows) Hello, young lady. May I be allowed to say that you're the most beautiful woman of all the fair maidens in this kingdom?
Maxine: (Beams and curtsies) Thank you, good sir. You may be large, but you're far from being a lout. You have gentle manners and a facile tongue.
John: I'd be honored if you would be my dancing partner.
Maxine: (Grins) There's no one else I'd choose!
Chris: (He goes to Jenny) Hey babe, damn, you sure look snazzy! Where have you been all my life?
Jenny: Waiting for your lazy butt to find me.
Chris: Wanna go cut a rug?
Jenny: You bet!
(Danny shyly goes up to Kimberly as Chris leads Jenny to the dance floor) Uh...uh...uh...oh man, you look sooo good...uh...would you...uh...
Kimberly: Oh, just dance with me!
Danny: Yeah. (He grabs Kim's arms and leads her out to the dance floor. We briefly see Marcus take the arm of a plump female extra in a frilly yellow gown before we cut over to Daphne and her entourage. Emma comes over to her.)
Emma: (Elbows her way through the crowd) Excuse me, gentlemen, pardon me. (Makes her way through the crowd as it parts to reveal the three Jolly Green Giants with Daphne)
Cory: Fair maid, your beauty outshines the heavens itself. (Kisses her hand; Bobby shoves him aside)
Bobby: You are by far the fairest flower in this room.
Joe: (Elbows Bobby aside and takes Daphne's hand) I've never seen a girl who looked like you!
Daphne: Fellas, I'm sorry, but I'm looking for someone else.
(The crowd parts at this point to reveal Davy and Mike. Mike has a walking stick in addition to his mask.)
Mike: (In a bored, crackling voice) My nephew is looking for a capable bride. He'll accept nothing but the best.
Emma: (Narrows her eyes; she recognizes Mike and Davy) They she'll not have him or you.
Mike: Why don't you let the lass decide, Your Ladyship?
Cory: And who are you anyway, Sire?
Mike: I am the Count Lansfeld of Manchesteria, and this is my nephew, Thomas.
Bobby: Never heard of the place.
Mike: It's a great many miles from here. We traveled this far because we heard of the extraordinary beauty of this land (grins) and of it's fine ladies.
Daphne: *slowly smiles* I accept.
Emma: (Shakes her head) Daphne, I don't believe this man is worthy of you.
Mike: (Takes Emma's hand) Let the girl alone, Lady. She is of age and able to make up her own mind.
Daphne: *takes Davy's hand* He's worthy.
Emma: But... (Davy leads Daphne onto the dance floor as Mike takes Emma's arm)
Mike: (Narrows his eyes; whispers) Em, cut it out. The kids are old enough to make up their own minds. They know what they want. :
Emma: I'll not have Daphne in love with a criminal!
Mike: She is, anyway. (As he takes her into his arms) What makes you so certain we're criminals?
Emma: You were banished from Belgravia for treason and murder!
Mike: King Peter never gave David and I a chance to plead our case. What can I do or say to make you believe we're innocent? We'd never harm Andrew, Lorrena, or the King.
Emma: But I saw the evidence...
Mike: (As he swings Emma in time to "Sometime In the Morning") What you saw was likely planted. I'd never seen that evidence before it was found in my bedroom. I didn't even know Lorrena or Andrew were there before all this started.
Emma: (As he dips her) Michael, where did you go in the days before we found the evidence? You disappeared, and even David couldn't find you!
Michael: Emily, believe me when I say I went to our cabin in the woods to practice and to decide my next move. I knew George was trying to move in and take Lone Star Manor. The land around it is rich with minerals and good crops, and my magic is second only to the King's in power. It was only a matter of time before he attacked me. (Frowns as he lifts Emma back up) But I didn't think he'd go after my good name and reputation.
Emma: Why are you here now, risking your neck? You know you're not supposed to be in Belgravia. Lord George may see you.
Mike: He won't. David and our boys and me are good at these disguises by now. (As the song ends, he leans over and kisses Emma's hand, then says out loud) Lady Emily, thank you for the dance. You are a distinguished dancer and a truly lovely woman.
Emma: (Flutters her brown and red lace fan and curtsies) Thank you, Count. You are an...interesting...individual.
Mike: Emily, I...I have to do it. (He takes her chin in his hands) I still love you. (He kisses her deeply before letting go and vanishing into the crowds)
Emma: (Breathless; her eyes finally widen) Oh...oh my...The White Knight! (Sees that she's missing her bracelets and necklace) Mike...uh, Count, wait up! (She goes after him)
Davy: (Cut to him and Daphne as the song ends; she curtsies) Lady Daphne, you are the finest dancer I've ever had the honor of performing with.
Daphne: And you are the finest gentlemen I've ever had the honor of dancing with.
Davy: Oh Daph.. (Whispers) Give me your necklace and rings. We're supposed to be stealing jewels. We're going to sell them for money for the poor of Lone Star Town and Belgrave Town. I don't want the other men to think I'm doing something else.
Daphne: *whispers back* Okay. Just don't sell them!
Davy: I'll make sure you and the other Queen’s Guards get their jewels back. (Sighs) I've missed you so, luv. You're the only suitor I'll ever want.
Daphne: And I you, David. *lays her head on his shoulder*
Davy: Let's go out to the Rose Garden, luv. We can talk more freely there.
(Mike waves the Martians over to the edge of the set and go behind the "stage" as the three Jolly Green Giants stomp up to Emilio and Lauren.)
Bobby: Sire, you promised one of us would be able to claim the hand of Maid Daphne, yet she walks off with some wimpy little count's nephew!
Cory: Who is that guy, anyway? He's so small, one of us could step on him!
Emilio: I don't know who he was, but I'm interested in finding out.
Joe: And what about those other guys who were with them? The tall guy who danced with Lady Emily sure looked familiar...
Cory: I know I've seen him before!
Bobby: We saw Maid Daphne walk off with that shrimp to the Rose Garden!
Emilio: *puts his hands up* Okay, fellas, I get the point. We'll just have to find out who they are.
Mike: (We briefly cut to Mike and the other Martians as they set up; they now wear gowns like the other women, make-up, and costume jewelry. Mike wears his red wig again) Where's Davy?
Chris: I think I saw him go in the Rose Garden.
Mike: (Groans) Out there playing games with Daphne. We're going to have to start without him. I'll sing the number. We'll go after him when we've finished.
Danny: Right, Fearless Leader.
(Cut to the Rose Garden. Davy and Daphne are leaned over each other, kissing again.)
Davy: (Sighs) You're so beautiful, Daphne.
Daphne: And you're so handsome, David.
Davy: (Sighs) I hate to ask you for more information tonight, but Michael wants to know about what Lord George is up to now. He and George fought, and he fears that, between yesterday and what he told Lauren, they may know about him and about us. He's afraid it'll jeopardize our mission and our chances of restoring our names.
Daphne: I fear he might have an idea about you as well, though I can't be sure how much they may know.
Davy: How's Emily after yesterday? Michael was especially worried about her. She was still dazed when we sent you away with the other Guardswomen.
Daphne: She was pretty much the same way until we came here.
Davy: How much do you think Emily knows? She's no fool. I've told Michael that he should tell her and trust her, but he's so upset over the way she's acted. He's so crazy about her...but she hurt him deeply when she broke their engagement over that blasted evidence.
(They don't notice George, Nyles, Lauren, and Jessie sneaking up behind the rose bushes.)
Daphne: I'm not sure, but...
Jessie: (As they duck around the front, surrounding Daphne and Davy) Ah HA! What are you two doin' out here? The party's in there! (Points back at the "throne room.")
Davy: Oh, we just came out for a bit of fresh air.
Daphne: Yes, it was getting rather stuffy in there.
Emilio: Who's the young man?
Davy: I'm Thomas, the nephew of Count Lansfeld of Manchesteria (grins and leans into Daphne) and Maid Daphne's new suitor.
Emilio: *folds his arms* I believe you're more than who you say you are.
Davy: What makes you think that?
Emilio: The mysterious air about you.
(Davy moves in closer to Daphne and puts his hand on the hilt of his sword. The Wolf Men make their way into the Rose Garden from the wings. They surround Davy and Daphne. Andrew leans in close to them and sniffs Davy.)
Andrew: Master, this is one of them. I have smelled him before. Even before yesterday.
Emilio: I knew it.
Davy: Get OFF of me! (He slaps Andrew's nose. Andrew roars, rearing up and stepping back)
Andrew: That HURT!
Jessie: He's sooo cute! Can I keep him?
Davy: What do I look like, your pet frog?
(Davy tries to nudge Daphne behind him, not an easy thing to do in her huge skirts)
Andrew: What will we do with them, Master?
Davy: (Narrows his eyes) You'll let us alone. We weren't harming anyone out here.
(Davy and Daphne stand as the strains of "I Won't Be The Same Without Her" are heard from the Throne Room. He pushes Daphne behind him and puts out a hand.)
Davy: Now fellas, come on...
Jessie: What are we going to do with them?
(Davy jumps away as several of the Wolf Men take swings at him. Some of them try to paw Daphne, but he smacks their hands away.)
*Emilio points for Nyles and Jessie to go after Daphne.*
(The two take hold of her arms. Davy jumps on Nyles, trying to get him away from Daphne.)
*Emilio and Lauren pull Davy off.*
(Davy pulls out his sword and wiggles his fingers at Emilio. How about a duel?)
(Emilio pulls out his sword, and the two fight, jumping around the Rose Garden. Emilio finally manages to knock Davy's sword from his hands. The Wolf Men pounce on him, holding him to the ground, as Emilio takes his sword and inspects it.)
Davy: No! Give my sword back!
Emilio: *holds Davy back* Wait. This sword is extremely familiar. I've seen it very recently.
Davy: You've never seen it before! I've never been here before in my life!
Andrew: He's a liar, Master. (Yanks Davy's chin roughly and gazes into his angry and horrified eyes) I know this boy.
Emilio: Oh, but you have...David!
Davy: No, I'm tellin' you, my name is Thomas!
Emilio: The charade is over, David. Give it up.
Davy: (Growls) You'll never find the others!
Emilio: Oh, won't I? I think I will.
