Everyone ready to find out what's really going on here?
Mike: I don't like the sound of that.
(Peter says nothing; he's still too busy gawking at the equipment. :o )
Micky: Ready!
Davy: Looks like we don't 'ave a choice. :P
(We open back in the lobby. The entire group stands with Angelica, who smiles genuinely now.)
Angelica: ...And that's what we do here at Gemstone Software, the Jewel of the Future. (She opens the door) I've enjoyed having you. Mr. Nesmith and I have to discuss that new software now, the one dealing with stopping the music pirates and illegal downloads.
Peter: (Turns to Micky as they head out) Micky, I don't like this. She didn't really tell us much of anything! She barely answered my questions!
Micky: I don't like this, either. She's covering up something.
Peter: I'll bet it has to do with that chair we saw! She never did really tell us what that was!
Micky: I'm almost afraid to find out what it's for.
Valerie: Is there anywhere quiet we can go to talk? (Grins) Quieter than your house, that is. ;)
Mick: One of my buddies owns an internet cafe that dad likes to frequent. I've been there so often, I have a latte named after me.
(Valerie laughs. :)) )
Peter: What's a latte?
Mick: Well, it's something that COSTS "a latte." ;)
Micky: *rolls his eyes* It's a form of coffee.
Peter: Oh.
(Valerie laughs harder.)
Peter: Well, let's go have one of those, then! I like nice little cafes.
Valerie: So do I. I'd love to see if they're still the same in 1997.
Micky: I think you're gonna be pleasantly surprised.
Peter: (Grins) Let's go, then! (He runs for Ursula)
Valerie: (Sighs and turns to Micky) Is he still like that?
Micky: For the most part, yes.
Valerie: (Smiles) Good.
(They head for the car. We cut back to Mike and Angelica as they walk down one of the sand-colored hallways of the building.)
Angelica: I need you for a little...experiment.
Mike: Me? What kinda experiment?
Angelica: I'd love it if you helped test our new musical software. You know so much about music. You're only the head of one of the world's leading media companies! We could use your helpful advice (slight smirk, which she quickly softens) and your talent.
Mike: In that case, I'd love to!
(She leads him back into the lab with the chair and the computers. The other five workers are already there. Mimi leans over a computer, giggling. July nudges her; she quickly shuts down the window she was looking at and disconnects the server, trying to look innocent.)
Angelica: You've met our people before, Michael. Just let Donald and Stephan sit you down, and we'll get started.
Mike: Okay, sure.
(Angelica smirks as two young men sit Mike down in the chair and fit the metal band over his head, positioning it so the mirrors aim straight for his head. Her smile grows nasty, however, when her male collegues slap metal bands over Mike's wrists and ankles as well.)
Mike: What're those for? *wiggles his fingers*
Angelica: They're to make sure you don't try to go anywhere during the downloading process.
*Mike raises an eyebrow.*
(July helps the two men fit wires around Mike's head. The wires are attatched to the row of computers surrounding the chair in a "u" formation and to a simple, normal cell phone recharging on a table.)
Angelica: Haven't you figured it out yet, Mr. Nesmith, that I love a man with a good mind? I like talent. I like to take talent.
Mike: *eyes narrow* What is this experiment, really?
July: Operation: Mind Download is set, Dr. Pickens.
Angelica: You're going to help us demonstrate the marvel of the Information Age, Michael. We're going to download music right from your head. (Runs her fingers further up his chest and head, making sure to hit sensitive spots)
Mike: I've changed my mind. Let me up!
Angelica: Why, Mr. Nesmith, I thought you liked to try new equpiment. Magnetic South has the reputation for being adventurous. I saw some of the movies you did in the 80s with Galaxy Studios. This couldn't be any stranger than they were! ;)
Mike: It is when I'm physically part of it!
Angelica: Don't you want to do something amazing for science?
Mike: No, not anymore. :P
Angelica: You will be now. (She turns to the people working on the computers) You can turn them on now, boys. ;)
*Mike struggles.*
(Everyone sits down at their terminal as "Admiral Mike" begins. Angelica fits one last metal band over Mike's mouth before she joins the younger scientists at the computers.)
(The rest of the video is a series of disjointed computer graphics and animation, some of them half-finished, detailing what's in Mike's head, from video scans of his profile to computer graphic versions of his life and his music. We even get the Monkees singing on what looks like the bandstand at the Pad done in computer graphics.)
(It ends with Mike screaming as best he can under the metal. The light goes right into his head before consuming him. We see tiny computer-animated "pixels" traveling along a wire into the cell phone as the song ends.)
Mimi: (Squeals) That is soooo weird!
Donald: I don't know if we should be doing this. I mean, two musicians on tour being missing are one thing, but Michael Nesmith is a big-time executive. People will REALLY miss him.
Angelica: No, they won't. He's divorced, doesn't get along all that well with his ex-wife, and has sequestered himself away in his ranch for the past year trying to pass that anti-piracy law. They'll all think he's gone back into seclusion.
July: How is he going to help us?
Angelica: In addition to music, we have all his information about the anti-piracy law and what he was going to do online. (Her grin is evil) We could use that. >:)
Donald: I don't think this is ethical...
Angelica: Do you want to go back to the way you WERE, the way we all WERE, or do you want to be one of the beautiful people...and stay that way? Do you remember what you used to look like? All of you?
(They all quickly nod, turning pale.)
Angelica: Good. I have a convention to go to in LA. I'm speaking on new music software. The rest of you are free to take the afternoon off.
(Angelica leaves, putting the cell phone in her coat. As she leaves, the entire room bursts into whoops of joy and thrown paper. :D)
*As the celebration continues, we fade out and fade in on a large, busy cafe. There's comfy furniture and small personal computers throughout the place.*
(Micky, Valerie, Peter, Katie, and the twins enter. Peter grins and takes a deep sniff.)
Peter: Ummm...I smell tea...with honey and milk.
Valerie: (She's practically drooling) Coffee...
Mick: Espresso. :D
Micky: And he kids me about coffee drinking.
(Emma sits at one computer terminal, clacking away at something. Everyone but the twins join her.)
Katie: Hi, Mom. What are you doing?
Emma: I'm doing reasearch for my book. I want to do another collection of short stories, this one on short mysteries with high-tech themes.
Katie: (Grins) Which should be interesting, seeing how you only know how to turn it on, surf the 'Net, type, and work simple word processor programs.
Emma: (Ignores her daughter; to Micky) How was your tour?
Micky: *pulls up a chair next to her* It was okay.
Peter: I don't like that place or that woman.
Micky: I can't put my finger on it, but there's something very wrong with her.
Emma: (Mutters) Tell me about it. I've been chatting with some old cronies from the LA Times and the Malibu Beach Register, and I've gotten some VERY interesting information about Miss Angelica Pickens. :p
Katie: (Raises an eyebrow) Interesting?
Emma: (Pulls up a link) She didn't always look like the older Goldie Hawn. Just a year ago, according to this site, she looked like this... (Clicks on a link; her screen now shows a plain, cold-looking older woman with faded gray-yellow hair and a heavily lined cheeks)
Peter: Wow! She looks almost like that, but not really.
Valerie: That must have been some good cosmetic surgeon.
Emma: Too good. No surgeon could have done such a fine, detailed change.
Micky: *eyes narrow* I'm not liking where this is going.
Emma: And Davy's little friend? She has a site, too. She took the page down, but I managed to dig it back up, and...
(She clicks a few more times, now revealing a dingy-looking, pock-marked young woman in her early 20s with a big brace-covered smile, short wavy dirt-blond hair, and round glasses.)
Emma: And here's the picture of her currently on her site...
(She brings up what looks like a gussied-up, soft-focus shot of Mimi from the Gemstone Labs.)
Katie: Oh my god! She seems like two different people!
Emma: Except for the glasses. I guess she couldn't do anything about her eyesight but get nicer glasses. (Adjusts her own) Which I completely understand.
Micky: This couldn't just be coincidence, could it?
Valerie: I don't know. It could be cosmetic surgery, but...
Emma: Wouldn't there be scars?
(Peter is wandering around the room, looking around.)
Katie: She could have used a Paint program to remove the scars...
Emma: True, but still, it all seems so FAST. Her site makes no mention of any surgery, either. It's mostly technical jargon and links to gossip magazines. :p
Valerie: Where's Peter?
Katie: (Looks around) I don't know.
Micky: I think he was wandering around again.
("Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere" begins as we see Peter wander over to the cafe area, where Mick and Shelly round up everyone's drinks. Mick balances a big tray of small cakes, plate-sized cookies, cheesecake slices, and scones.)
*Shelly watches him balance the tray, her face clearly showing that she's worried the tray will fall.*
(Peter goes to a selection of books. He chooses one on Indian religions. He flips open the book and reads it as he returns to the table.)
(Peter isn't looking where he's going and walks straight into Mick and his tray.)
(Shelly pulls back and manages to avoid spilling the drinks. Peter starts to cry, and Mick grumbles. Shelly puts the drinks on the counter as Mick orders again and a young woman comes out with a mop and wheeled bucket to clean up the mess.)
(Micky stops and chats with the band playing the song.)
(Katie raises her eyebrows as Mimi and July enter, in suits with briefcases under their arms. They're chattering away, gossiping and babbling about celebrities and handsome men. She points them out to her mother, who nods and makes a face.)
(Katie goes over to Mick and Shelly as they return with another laden tray of drinks and snacks. She offers to help Mick with the snacks to avoid another disaster, then points out July and Mimi. They sit down with Emma as the song ends.)
