(We open in a large, spacious park fringed with beautiful palm trees. Mike climbs out of the MonkeeMobile, followed by an excited Katie. Peter arrives next in an orange Pontiac GTO. He takes Jordan out of his car seat and joins Mike and Katie.)
Peter: Hi, Michael. So, you got the girls' message, too?
Mike: (Grumbles) All I know is Katie n' I woke this morning to find a message taped to our refrigerator and a batch of chocolate chip muffins on the table. Said somethin' about findin' a big surprise at the park. (Looks around) I don't see nuthin'.
Peter: Valerie left me the same message in the parlor. (Smiles) I'm sure the girls are cooking up something extra-special.
Micky: *as he and the twins, with Leah in his arms, join the others* All right, where's this big surprise?
*The twins bounce around yelling "Surprise, surprise!"*
Mike: (He follows Katie over to Mick and the kids) You too?
Katie: Gonna find mommies! :D
Micky: Yup. Better be food. I'm starving!
Peter: Did you have breakfast? Valerie bought a big whole wheat raisin cinnamon-bread from Millie for Jordan and me this morning.
Micky: Oh, I had breakfast. I'm just still hungry.
Davy: *walks over with Elizabeth* 'Ey, mates. Where's the big surprise?
Mike: That's what we'd like to know!
Katie: (Runs over to the twins, followed more slowly by Jordan) "Hi, guys! Happy Daddy's Day!"
Little Mick: "Happy Daddy's Day!" :D
Shelly: "Hi!" :)
Jordan: "Hi there! We're going to help our daddies find our mommies' big surprise!"
Shelly: "Sounds like fun!"
Mike: Ok, everyone, spread out. The girls gotta left our surprises somewhere!
Katie: Go find our surprise!
Little Mick: Yay, surprise! :D
Micky: *shrugs* Yay! A surprise!
Shelly: *chuckles* Daddy's silly! ;)
Mike: No kiddin', Shel.
(Everyone spreads out around the parking lot area, searching high and low for the girls. Mike finally finds a piece of paper tacked to a tree.)
Mike: "When you want to have fun all day, go to a place where you do nothing but play! When you find the next clue on the things that rise, you'll get one step closer to your surprise." (Makes a face) Riddles! :p
Peter: Where would you go to have fun all day in a park?
(Katie scratches her head, imitating her father, who does the same thing.)
Micky: The playground, of course!
Katie: Playgr'nd!
Jordan: Go! Swings! :D
Peter: I know where the playground is here. Let's take the kids there for a while while we look for clues. :)
Mike: Yeah, but the girls are gonna be expectin' us!
Peter: They aren't in that much of a hurry if they sent us to a playground. They know the kids would never resist it.
Mike: They know Mick and Davy can't resist it.
"Papa Gene's Blues" begins as the kids race onto the playground, a wood-and-metal cascade of swings, monkey bars, merry-go-rounds, see-saws, and climbing gyms.)
(Peter helps Jordan hold onto the monkey bars. He grins when he's able to hang for a few minutes before returning to his daddy's arms. :D)
(Katie runs to the swings and asks for a really, REALLY big push from Papa, who obliges.)
*This twins and Micky jump on the climbing gym. Davy watches Elizabeth and Leah.*
(Jordan and Peter get on one end of the see-saw, and Mike and Katie get on the other. They go up and down, though Peter, being somewhat bigger, tends to come down a bit harder.)
(Peter comes down really hard on the last one. Jordan ends up wailing. Katie points at the merry-go-round the twins are dragging Micky to. Peter gets off and lets Jordan go...which brings Mike and Katie crashing down. Katie squeals, but she gets over it quickly and heads for the merry-go-round. Mike rubs his rear and grumbles. Peter inspects the underside of the see-saw.)
(As Mike gets up, Davy hands Lizzie over to Mike and practically pushes him onto the bench where he was. He runs over to the merry-go-round to join the others, leaving Mike grumbling. Peter sits down next to Mike and takes Leah. Merry-go-rounds make him too dizzy!)
*Micky, Davy, and the kids have a great timme hollering and whooping on the merry-go-round!* :D
(Peter returns to the see-saw with Leah as the music ends. He looks under his and Jordan's seat on the see-saw...and sees something white. He runs over to the others as the merry-go-round completes it's fourth spin.)
Peter: Guys! I found it! Leah and I found it!
Mike: (Groans) Could you guys cut it out? I'm gettin' dizzy, an' I'm sure Lizzie is, too.
Peter: Micky, stop the merry-go-round! I found the next clue!
Micky: Okay! *gets on the edge of the merry-go-round and sticks his legs out, digging his heels into the the ground, slowing them to a stop* Everybody off!
Katie: (As she climbs off) "That was so much fun! We went around and around!"
Jordan: (He wobbles a bit) "Why is everything still moving?" :p
Katie: "Oooh, I think you're dizzy! I'll help you!" (Katie takes his arm)
Jordan: (Smiles) "Thanks, Katie. I needed that."
*The twins walk into each other, then burst out laughing!* :D
Peter: (Chuckles at the twins, then reads the message) "Daffy, Donald, Uncle Scrooge, and Daisy...
Where's the place they would be? When this place comes into view, you'll have found your next clue."
Mike: Huh?
Katie: Donald? Daisy? Daf...oh! Duckies! :D
Jordan: Yeah!
Peter: Where would ducks be?
Mike: At a pond or a lake?
Peter: (Grins) There's a duck pond just down the path from here!
Micky: Then to the pond we go!
(Cut to the Monkees and the kids coming to the end of the path. There's a large pond ringed by trees, with a little stone bridge connecting one end of the path with the other. A small pier with a little white-washed pavillion juts out into the pond. Ducks, swans, and other kind of waterfowl swim, fly, and nibble everywhere.)
(The kids all chase the ducks, geese, and swans. Katie is facinated by a duck who pecks at the ground near her. She goes up to the little girl, stares at her, then returns to pecking.)
(Jordan doesn't like the birds at all. They're so noisy! He stays close to his daddy.)
*Micky spots something odd at the edge of the pond. It's a rubber duck tied to a branch on jutting out of the bank!*
Micky: Hey, guys, I found the next clue! :D
Mike: Yeah? What does it say?
Micky: *reads* Hopefully you aren't expecting this clue to rhyme, because we simply didn't have the time. So why don't you check out that grove of trees, and look for the next clue on your knees. *pauses* Hey, that rhymes! *chuckles* I think Lauren wrote this one.
Mike: (Grins) Probably by force, 'cause I know this usually ain't her thing. Em or Daphne musta talked her into it.
Peter: Grove of trees? There's hundreds of groves of trees in this park!
Mike: I'll bet they mean the one near here, just over the bridge, close to where the volleyball net and baseball fields are.
Micky: *nods* But she could fit the volleyball court in there and keep the rhyme going.
Mike: Well, at any rate, let's go look for that next clue.
(We get a lovely overhead shot of the kids and their fathers heading across the stone footbridge and around the lake. They stop in a grove of trees in a quiet area, surrounded by ferns and Spanish moss.)
Peter: (Shivers) Boy, does this place give me the creeps.
Jordan: Scary. :p
Mike: Well, what are you lookin' at? Everyone who can, get down on their knees and look for that next clue!
(Everyone wanders around on their knees as best they can. Mike lets out a yelp. He picks his knee up and looks down at a branch with thorns on it.)
Mike: Dam...darn it! (He pulls out the branch and throws it in the bushes) I'm wonderin' if the girls meant somewhere else, 'cause this is just crazy.
Davy: I think I found anothah clue, mates. *pulls out a paper folded like a flower; unfolds it and reads* You've made it this far, now you just need to rise. Why don't you head to Barbecue Shelter One and find your big surprise?
Mike: (Gets up creakily) Finally!
Peter: All right! (Gets up and helps Jordan up) :D
Jordan: Yay!
Katie: Surprise!
Micky: I heard barbecue!
*The twins laugh. Even Leah grins.*
Peter: (Takes Jordan's hand) Well, come on then! Micky's hungry!
Mike: God forbid. (Takes Katie's hand)
Katie: Wanna ham'burger!
Jordan: Hot doggie!
(Fade out on the guys and the kids heading down another, shadier path. Cut to a barbecue shelter decorated with red and white streamers and balloons. Emma sets out cupcakes and cookies. Valerie pulls the cellophane off of macaroni and pasta salads and beef patties. Lauren and Daphne put up a sign that says "Happy Father's Day!" with the kids' and their mother's names signed on it.)
Valerie: (Grins) This was a brilliant idea, ladies, getting the kids and the boys out of our hair AND letting them blow off some steam by finding those clues we set up yesterday.
Emma: It was so much easier to get everything together without little and big people underfoot. (Looks up at the other two) How's the sign coming?
Lauren: Almost got it...
Daphne: *as the tack in the last corner* There! Looks great!
Emma: (Smiles) That's wonderful! I hope the guys like their surprise. (Sighs) I hope Mike does.
Valerie: He has been in the studio a lot lately.
Emma: And he hasn't been a barrel of laughs when he was home.
Lauren: I think they'll enjoy it.
(There's a burst of laughter from a path leading out of a grove of trees. Little Micky and Katie arrive first, running at full blast, followed by Big Micky, Davy, Peter holding Shelly and Jordan's hands, and last of all Mike.)
Katie: Lookit! (Points to the shelter) We found our mommies! :D
Jordan: Mommy! (He runs right over to his mother, who lifts him into her arms)
Valerie: Hi, sweetie. Did you have fun?
Jordan: Uh-huh. Playgr'nd! :D
Emma: (Turns to Katie as Mike takes her hand and helps her get a drink of red Kool-Aid from a pitcher) Did you like our little surprise?
Mike: Not bad, except for gettin' that thorn in my knee.
Katie: We had lotta fun! :D
Micky: *wraps his free arm around Lauren's shoulders* Nice rhyme, babe.
Lauren: I guess it was obvious which clue was mine, huh?
Daphne: Told ya, Lauren.
Lauren: *rolls her eyes* I'll give ya the buck later, Daph.
Daphne: I'll hold you to that.
Davy: This is a great idea, ladies. *gives Daphne a kiss on the cheek*
Mike: Yeah. We had a nice time with the kids, thorns n' all.
Katie: I saw my papa! (She takes her father's hand and looks at him with her big brown eyes)
Mike: Aw, cowgirl, I promise I'll spend more time with you. We're almost done this album.
Emma: And I'll hold you to that.
Peter: Well, what are we waiting for? (Takes a present from the pile on the middle table) Let's eat and celebrate!
Jordan: Yay! :D
Mike: (Starts to put patties on the grill) Sounds good to me.
(We end with the boys opening gifts in the center of the shelter, with happy kids on laps and wives looking on. The final shot is of the shelter and the "Happy Daddy's Day!" sign.)
