Everyone ready for KLAC's Christmas special?

Mike: I'll just be doin' the music arrangement this year.

Peter: I'll help with the music behind the scenes.

Sure you will, once we get going....

Micky: I'm ready!

Davy: Me too.

(We open at KLAC. Junior, now much taller and no longer looking like much of a Junior, stands with Micky and Davy onstage. They're in front of a backdrop made to look like a huge gingerbread beach hut, complete with sugar crystal "sand," dancers in bathing suits and floral skirts, a path made of candy sea shells, and a tree hung with local shells and sea dollars. The room is dotted with felt and wood "gingerbread people" wearing summer clothes.)

Junior: (Voice is now deeper, too) Thanks for appearin' in our special this year, fellas.

Mike: We're glad to help, even if you just got saddled with those two. (Juts a finger at Micky and Davy)

Micky: Hey...

Junior: I wish you could all appear, like you did in the 1969 special.

Mike: Sorry, kiddo. We don't do group appearances anymore.

Junior: (Sighs) All right. I'm just glad all of you are here, even if you're not all going to appear on stage. (Turns to Micky) And you did a wonderful job, helping our new stagehands with these sets! The gingerbread beach hut looks good enough to eat!

Micky: You're welcome, Junior.

Steve: (The go-fer passes through, pointing to his watch and looking nervous) Sixty seconds, people!

Mike: Ok Mick, Dave, you guys give it all ya got. Remember, Pete n' I are watchin' in the wings, and the girls and the kids are in the audience.

*The guys take their place as time counts down.*

Arthur Rupert: (He wears slacks, sandals, a sun hat, and a Hawaiian shirt and carries a drink with a little paper umbrella as the cameras turn on him) And welcome once again to this year's annual KLAC Holiday Spectacular! This year, the family and I are taking a vacation at Santa's favorite spot, the Sandwich Islands. (Trees with what looks like sandwiches drawn on them roll into the background behind Arthur Rupert) Looks good enough to eat, doesn't it? I might go and pick myself a roast beef on rye later. (Grins as Micky and Davy, both dressed in Hawaiian shirts, sandals, and shorts, stroll in) And here's two of our favorite local singers, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones! How's life on the beach, boys?

Mike: (Cut to him rolling his eyes backstage) I told Micky that "Sandwich Islands" bit was silly.

Micky: Great!

Davy: Couldn't be better, mate.

Arthur Rupert: I think all the beachcombers in the audience would love to hear you boys do our first number.

("Jingle Bell Rock" begins as Micky grabs a guitar that's set up behind a musical instrument "stand" that's made to look like chocolate. Arthur Rupert hands Davy a microphone.)

(Angelina Druddard and her dancers prance out, all wearing bathing suits, bikinis, high-heeled sandals, sunglasses, and floaty floral skirts.)

(Two of the dancers join Davy for a beach soft-shoe. Arthur waltzes with another.)

(Marian and several more dancers come in for a girl-group kick line.)

(One of the dancers grabs Micky and soft-shoes with him.)

Arthur: (Marian and several of the dancers remain as the song ends) So, gentlemen, what brings you to the Gingerbread Cookie Beach today? Are you here for the big Sand Cookie Building Contest? The winner gets a Candy Cane Loving Cup!

Davy: You bet we are.

Micky: And we're gonna win!

Arthur: I'm sure you are... (points at Marian and several of the dancers, who are already beginning to build a house made from "sand cookies," ie square pieces of wood covered with yellow sandpaper that fit together) ...but it looks like you have some competition.

*Micky and Davy do a double take, look at each other, scream, run for their set up, and start building.*

(An instrumental "Deck the Halls" begins as the two groups build their houses. Davy starts putting up the foundation. Arthur acts as judge, walking between the two groups and admiring their work.)

(Davy looks around for Micky...and sees him walking up to his foundation, hidden under a pile of huge wood "candies" and tottering this way and that.)

(Marian and her girls already have the sides of the house up. The sides look like rough sand-colored icing.)

(Davy pulls Micky over to the house. The girls are way ahead! We have to do something!)

*Micky waves it off. He's not worried.*

(The girls are working on the roof. Davy tugs on Micky as he starts to build the walls. They're almost done!)

*Micky produces four walls already put together. He sets them on the foundation, then reaches for an already put together roof. The drummer grins. Told ya not to worry.*

(Davy grins and picks up a giant pink circle that's supposed to be a huge Necco. Let's get decorating, then!)

*Micky picks up some "candies" and starts his decorating...at warp speed!*

(Davy and the girls' jaws drop as he moves, leaving trails of blue and red light in his wake. When the song's done, Micky proudly sits on top of a huge "Sand Cookie" castle, complete with drawbridge. It's twice the size of the girls' cookie cottage.)

Micky: Ta daaa!

Arthur: (As everyone onstage and in the audience applauds) Very nice, Micky.

Steve: (He walks out shorts and a t-shirt, holding a red-and-white striped trophy) You're more than deserving of our Candy Cane Loving Cup! (Hands the trophy to Micky, then dashes off-stage)

Davy: Hey Mick, we ain't never won a trophy before! We're official winners now.

Arthur: (As Peter and another man and a woman usher some children in, all wearing t-shirts with Christmas designs and jeans with red-and-green patches) You did a good job, son. They're waitin' to take your picture right outside the Gingerbread Beach Hut. And as they do, we'll hear traditional carols from the LA City Children's Choir.

Davy: (As Micky continues to bow for the audience) If we can get the canned ham outta here.

Peter: Micky! (He and Davy drag Micky offstage as Arthur introduces the kids)

Davy: (Rolls his eyes) You are such a ham, Mick.

Micky: Hey, I wanted them to know I appreciated winning!

Mike: (As he joins them) Yeah, well, don't appreciate it too much.

Peter: The kids really look forward to singing every year. (Sighs as we hear them perform "Away In a Manger") Don't they sound wonderful?

Mike: They're always good.

Micky: *Nods* They sure are!

Peter: I enjoyed helping with their rehearsals this year. What a wonderful group of children! Maybe we could get our kids in this when they're old enough.

Mike: (As the background changes behind the kids, who now sing "The Coventry Carol," into a view of water with moving waves) How are you guys gonna pull off this surfing scene?

Micky: Oh, I've got some special effects in mind.

Mike: (As the kids finish and their teachers heard them out) Hey guys, I think that's your cue!

Davy: (As they head out, whispers) Are you sure it was a good idea to ask Nyles to help with the surfing scene?

Micky: Of course! Trust me.

Arthur: (He returns with several dancers as the kids finally leave) And that was the LA City Children's Choir! Let's have a big hand for them! (Everyone claps; as the applause fades) And now, this year's annual Gingerbread Beach Surfing Contest! Let's hear it for our contestants! (Whips out a card and a pair of glasses and reads) Our first contestant will be Mr. Micky Dolenz!

(Junior hands Micky a red and green "surfboard," really a wooden prop in the shape of a surfboard.)

*Micky runs into the "waves" and starts "surfing."*

Arthur: Next, we have Mr. David Jones! (Junior hands him a blue surfboard with snowflakes painted on it)

(Davy comes out; all the girls whistle and hoot. He bows for them, then grabs his surfboard and follows after Micky. We see the two of them "surfing" in the background, bobbing on the up-and-down "waves.")

Arthur: And last, but I hope not least, Mr. Nyles Brown!

*Nyles runs out, though he nearly trips over something as he comes out from the back.*

Arthur: You ok, son?

Nyles: *Grins* I'm fine!

Arthur: Ready to show those two what you're made of, son?

(The girls all whistle and eye Nyles appreciatively. We see Micky and Davy on the "waves" in the background. Sometimes one will be ahead, sometimes the other.)

Nyles: Uh, yeah!

(Davy manages to pull ahead of Micky in the background, winking and waving at all the girls as he does. They squeal and giggle for him.)

*Nyles runs out, whooping, and actually attempts to dive in with the board. Surprisingly, there's a splash when he "hits the water." Moments later, he's on his feet on the board, right alongside Micky and Davy.*

Arthur: (He takes a microphone and acts as announcer as the girls run in front of the "waves," cheering the boys on) And it looks like Mr. Jones is in the lead...no, Mr. Dolenz...no, Mr. Jones...

(Suddenly, the "waves" jolt, and Nyles seems to blast ahead! All three guys blast off-stage, followed by Arthur Rupert. When they come back onstage, to the throngs of cheering girls, Arthur is holding Nyles' arm. Nyles has a goofy but triumphant grin on his face.)

Arthur: The winner!

*Nyles crows while Micky and Davy grump.*

Arthur: (Hangs a red "medal" with a green ribbon around Nyles neck) First place for our big winner! (Two of the dancers plant kisses on Nyles' cheeks while holding mistletoe over his head)

*Nyles turns as red as the medal.*

Arthur: (As Marian, Prissy Green, and several other people in beach gear come onto the stage) Well, it looks like it's time for Christmas with all my relatives! (He looks like he's ready to bolt and run, but Marian grabs him before he can.)

Marian: Oh no, Art. If I have to do this, you do.

(Micky and Davy duck backstage as the KLAC players begin their skit about California Christmases.)

Mike: (Smirks) I told you Nyles was the better surfer, Mick.

Micky: I let him win.

Mike: Sure you did.

Peter: You guys are doing great! Everyone seems to really enjoy it this year.

Mike: Shame we had to skip doing this a few years, but we were...busy.

Davy: Yeah, well, I think we could make up for that. *grins at Micky*

Micky: *Nods, also grinning* I like the way you think, Dave. *grins at the other two now*

Mike: What's the grins for?

Peter: (He gets it) You want us to go on with you.

Mike: Oh no...

Micky: Oh yes.

Davy: You got it, mates.

Peter: (Grins) It might be fun, at that...

Mike: Guys, we ain't a real music group anymore. We ain't even really played together in a while!

Micky: So?

Peter: I agree. Michael, it'll mostly be locals and their families watching this anyway. What harm could it do?

Steve: (Passes through again) You guys have thirty seconds! Arthur's about ready to announce the finale!

Mike: Well...all right, I guess...

Peter: Great!

Micky: All right!

Davy: Let’s go.

Arthur: (As Prissy, Marian, and the others move over to the Gingerbread Hut) And here's Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz to perform their song "Christmas Is My Time of Year"... (sees the other Monkees come out with them) ....with a bit of a surprise. Do I see some familiar faces?

Peter: Peter Tork here, former member of The Monkees. We thought we'd just lend these two a hand, so to speak.

Mike: Mike Nesmith.

Arthur: (His grin is genuine) Glad to see you boys together again.

Mike: (Shrugs) We're just helpin' out some old friends.

Peter: (As Davy takes a tambourine and Micky climbs behind a drum set) Ready, guys?

Micky: *Twirls his sticks* Always ready!

Davy: Ready, mates.

(We launch into "Christmas Is My Time of Year." Mike just plays, not really looking at anything but his guitar. Peter beams, happily moving back and forth, sometimes dancing with Davy or the dancers, and once with Marian.)

(Mike shakes his head as Micky goes to town on his drums...but he has a faint smile on his face.)

Arthur: (As the song ends; everyone is still dancing) Well, boys, looks like you still have it to me.

Peter: (Grins) Sure sounds like it.

Micky: Yeah, it does!

Arthur: Maybe we'll hear an album from you soon?

Mike: (Mutters) Don't count on it.

Peter: (Elbows him) You never know.

Arthur: After all, Christmas is a time of miracles.

Mike: It would take a real miracle for that to happen.

Peter: (Elbows Mike again) Anyway, my friends and I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays!

Mike: (Nods) Yeah.

Arthur: From all of us here at KLAC and our many friends, including Mr. Jones, Mr. Dolenz, and Mr. Brown. ;)

*The fellas waves.*

(We end with the entire cast singing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" to the camera and the audience...including the four Monkees, all with their arms around their shoulders, grinning at the camera and the audience and just happy to be together and on stage.)
