That afternoon, I'm in my dorm finishing some homework. There's a knock at the door.
"Come in," I said.
The door opened and Lewis came in.
"You used the door?" I said, more shocked than questioning.
"Yeah, I can't stay. I was on my way to DrugCo and thought I'd stop by," he said.
"Oh, that's too bad. I got invited to a party and want you to come. Guess I'll just gor for and hour or two," I said.
"Well, have a good time," he said.
'Thanks. See you tomorrow?" I said.
"Yeah," Lewis replied. "Bye." He left.
Several hours later, Lewis is at DrugCo, sweeping up.
'I wonder what kind of party Lauren was invited to,' he thought. He stopped sweeping. 'A frat party?' He went over to a phone and dialed a number. "Hi, Kate? It's Lewis. Where did today's delivery go? Yeah, the one to the frat party. Uh... no nothing's wrong. I was just wondering. Bye." He hung up the phone. 'Shit.' He ran out of the building.
It's about three hours into the party. All I had were a couple cups of soda, but my head started spinning so much I took a seat on the floor with my back against the wall. I heard something roll along next to me. I picked it up. A Buzz Beer bottle. 'Oswald, you idiot...' I thought.
Lewis came in one of the side doors and scanned the room, lookig for me. He spotted me and cmae over. "What're you doing with that?" He sat next to me and took the bottle.
My head hurt and I didn't want to argue about it, but I had to tell him. "It's not mine! It rolled past me and I picked it up to look at it."
He sighed. "Then why do you look wasted?"
"I don't know. All I had was soda," I said.
"Where'd you get it from?" he asked.
I was aobut to answer, then made a realization. "Dammit! Now, I know why the room is spinning! They spiked it!"
"Think you can make it back to the dorm?" Lewis asked.
"Yeah, I think so," I said.
A half hour later, I'm sitting in the chair in the corner and Lewis is sitting at my desk, drumming his fingers.
"You feeling any better?" he asked.
"Yeah a little bit," I said.
"You shouldn't have gone to that, you know," he said.
"How was I supposed to know? Nearly everyone there is in the Honors Program!" I said.
Lewis grimaced. "That's pretty bad." He paused. "You think you can keep the room in one place so I can go?"
"Probably but why?" I asked.
"I just don't want to see you like this anymore," he answered. "I'll be back tomorrow with some Tylenol."
I gave him a half smile. "Thanks."
"Bye," Lewis said, then left.
Lewis got back to his and oswald's apartment. Oswald was sitting at the booth, playing video games.
"Video games?" Lewis asked.
"Yeah," Oswald said, then turned to Lewis. "Did I do something
"Yes, you did something! Remember that party that you were delivering beer to today?" Lewis asked.
"Yeah," Oswald said.
"Well that just happened to be the party Lauren went to and the idiots at the bar decided it'd be funny if they used the beer to spike the other drinks, that's all," Lewis said.
"So... what's the problem?" Oswald asked.
"She's drunk and underage, you moron!" Lewis said. "Did Drew actually okay that delivery?"
"Um... well, he didn't actually know about the order..." Oswald said.
"Great. that's just wonderful. Oswald do you know exactly how easy it would be for the cops to bust us on selling alcohol to minors? We're the only ones who distribute Buzz Beer. It's all ours! We'll be in jail so fast, it'd make your head spin!" Lewis said, then paused. "I'm gonna get the bottle of Tylenol and go back and see how she's feeling. You can dwell on this."
Lewis went into one of the rooms, came back out, and left.
I'm sitting at my desk, with my head in my hands. Everytime I went to lay down, the room would start spinning so I gave up. Maybe I'll get a little sleep sitting up.
There's a tapping at the window.
"It's open, Lewis," I said.
He opened the window and poked his head in. "How'd ya know it was me?"
"I just did," I said.
Lewis came in through the window and sat on the end of my bed.
"I thought you weren't gonna come back till tomorrow," I said.
"Well, when I got back to my place, I sorta blew up at Oswald. Looks like I'll be sleeping on Drew's pool table tonight," he said.
"You can stay here. Besides, it's supposed to rain tonight," I said, then laid my head on the desk so I could look at Lewis.
"Thanks. Oh, I brought the Tylenol," he said.
"I'll take some as soon as the room stops going Mach 10," I said.
Lewis smiled. "Hey, I'm sorry about sorta accusing you ealrier. It was just the combination of you being wasted and holding the bottle..."
"Stop," I said, cutting him off. "I shouldn't've gone, but I wanted to meet some people."
"I know that, but it was wrong for me to assume that. You know what you're doing. You can't help something you don't know about. It happens to everyone. Lauren?" He looked right at me and saw I'd fallen asleep. He smiled. "I guess the room stopped spinning."
The next day, Drew is looking over the order that Oswald filled.
"I'm really sorry about that, Drew. God, I should've stopped that order when Oswald said it was going to a frat house," Kate said.
Drew put the paper down. "What's done, is done. Now, we just hope no one got in trouble at the party or else we'll be in jail for the next ten years."
Lewis came in and sat down.
"Where's Oswald?" Drew asked.
"Probably at the apartment," Lewis said.
"Didn't you come from there?" Kate asked.
"No," Lewis replied.
"Up till 3 talking with Lauren again, huh?" Kate said.
"Sort of," Lewis said. He saw the order to the frat house. "That order went to a party at Kent State. Some jerk at the bar thought it'd be funny to put beer in the sodas and Lauren got wasted. I ended up yelling at Oswald and staying with Lauren... even after the room stopped spinning."
"Is she okay?" Kate asked.
"Just a little queazy," Lewis said.
"We're gonna get busted on this, I just know it," Drew said.
"What'll we do about Oswald?" Kate asked.
"He's been yelled at enough. I say we just let him think about this and see if anything happens," Lewis said.
"Sounds good to me," Drew said.
"Me, too," Kate agreed.
I'm hovering over a text book when I hear a knock at the door. "Who is it?"
"Oswald."
"It's open," I said.
The door opened and Oswald came in. "Hiya, Lauren." He gave me a weak grin.
"Lewis told ya?" I asked, not really remembering that Lewis told me he'd yelled at Oswald.
"You could say that... I'm really sorry!" he said, practically pleading.
"You know, someone could've really gotten hurt because of that delivery. Listen, I don't want you to feel bad because someone spiked the sodas and I got wasted, I want you to think about all the others at that party. How many of them do you think actually had a sober friend to get them home and then keep an eye on them?" I said. "You don't have to dwell on it, just think about it, okay?"
"Okay...Can I go tell the others I learned my lesson?" Oswald said.
"Not yet, wiat until tomorrow and until then act really sad and mopey like you feel very guilty about what happened," I said.
He immediately slipped into a mope. "Oh, alright."
"Oh, and to make it even, I get to call you Eeyore for the next week," I said, then smiled.
"Okay," he said, still moping.
The End
