Saturday. Finally! The guys are playing pool. Kate and I are basically just watching. Fortunately, no one else knew about me sneaking into the men's room at the bowling alley yesterday. Goodthing, I'd never hear the end of it.
"Bills, bills, bills..." Kate said. She tore one envelope open. "Awe, crap!"
"What is it? Another bill?" I said.
"No, worse. They're fumigating our building, which means we hafta stay somewhere else for a week," Kate explained. "Drew?"
"Yeah?" Drew said.
"They're fumigating my building again," Kate said.
"Again?" Drew said. "Oh, alright, you can stay with me, but only because you have before..."
"So, I can't?" I said.
"Well..." Drew started.
"She can stay with us," Lewis blurted out, then looked as though he immediately regretted it.
"Is that okay with you, Oswald?" I asked.
"Yeah, sure," Oswald agreed.
"So, when are they starting that?" I asked.
"Um..." Kate said, then looked over the letter. "Tonight! Crap, we gotta get our stuff now!"
Kate and I jumped up and ran out of the yard.
Lewis and Oswald's apartment... over the warsaw. I swear these guys don't know the meaning of "clean".
"This looks promising," I said to myself, making a face.
"Hey, Lauren!" Oswald said, coming through the door, carrying two cases of beer. He put the cases on the table and turned to me. "So, how do ya like it?"
"It's, um..." I said, then swallowed, "...nice." I motioned towards the cases on the table. "Two cases of beer?"
Lewis came in, carrying two more cases. "Four!"
I shook my head. "I hope this is your stock pile for, oh, the next two months."
"Two months!" Oswald said, then laughed.
"Anyway... so where an I gonna sleep?" I asked.
Lewis came over and put his arm around my shoulders. "Well..."
"How's the booth?" Oswald interrupted, glaring at Lewis.
"The booth is fine," I replied, then looked at Lewis. "Nice try, pal." I picked up my bag and headed to the bathroom, then stopped just outside the door. "Oh, dear God..." I turned back to them. "As soon as I can, I am cleaning the bathroom." I turned back. "Ewww..." I took a breath, let it out, and went in.
Let me tell you, that booth is not comfortable for sleeping on! I swear I've gotten up 5 times and it's only two in the morning! Fortunately, it's now Sunday and we didn't have to work. Well, here I go, getting up for the 6th time. I needed a drink of water this time, so I went downstairs into the Warsaw. I grabbed a mug and got some water from the tap. I don't trust the faucet in the apartment. I shuddered just thinking about it.
After a few minutes, Lewis came down. Now, how did he know I was awake? Ah well, atleast I'll have some company.
"Coudn't sleep, huh?" Lewis asked.
"no," I said, then refilled my mug with more water.
"Wanna sit?" he said, motioning to the usual table.
"Sure," I replied
We went over to the table, took the chairs down and sat.
"What's the matter?" Lewis asked.
"There's nothing the matter," I said, then took a sip of water.
"You sure?" he asked.
"Yes," I said, beginning to get aggitated.
"You're positive?" he asked.
"Yup, " I answered.
"Are you really..." he started.
"Dammit, Lewis, will you knock it off!?" I said, most likely a little too loud.
Lewis backed off, sat back, and sorta hung his head. Awe, man...
I took another sip of water, then looked over at him. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have snapped at you, I'm just tired, that's all."
"And?" he asked.
I looked down at the mug. "I'm nervous."
"About what?" Lewis asked, with genuine concern.
I sighed an looked up. "I was thinking about when I first got here. I never had any intention of finding you guys. I've made all of you put up with me." I paused, "Then there's... us." I looked down at the mugh again.
We sat in silence for a few moments.
"You know, I really did have crush on you," Lewis said, breaking the silence.
"You said that... I just don't know how to handle... this," I said, still looking at the mug.
Lewis moved closer and lifted my chin with his finger "Remember when I was looking through your CDs, remember that conversation." He paused and took his finger away.
"I just don't wanna do anything I might regret," I said.
"I know," he agreed, then gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Oh, and don't make too much noise when you come back up, okay?" He got up, patted me on the head, then left.
I shook my head. I should've seen that coming. I kept mursing my water.
About 10 minutes later, Lewis came back down and over to the table.
"Forget something?" I asked.
"Uh... what'd you mean by something you might regret?" he asked.
"Well, like earlier when I asked where I wasgonna sleep..." I started.
"oh, that! I've done that to Kate," Lewis said. "really freaks her out."
I let a grin slip. "Thanks."
He gave me a confused look. "For what?"
"Everything," I said, paused, then looked at the empty mug in front of me. "Heh, that'll catch up with me pretty soon."
"So, just put the mug back. They'll never know you used it," Lewis said.
"Ewww... I hope the bartender doesn't do that," I said.
"I don't think he does," he said.
Ick. That's a lovely thought. "Well, now I'm too disgusted to go back to sleep."
"Maybe there's something on TV," Lewis suggested.
"At 2:30 in the morning?" I asked.
"There might be," he said, standing up.
"Okay," I said, then got up, leaving the mug on the table.
We went back up to the apartment, sat at the booth, and tried to find something to watch.
Morning.
Lewis woke up and stretched. I was curled up and still asleep.
He shook my arm. "Lauren, wake up."
I muttered and swatted at him. Hey, I never said I was a morning person.
He shook my arm again. "Wake up."
I muttered again and opened my eyes. "Morning already? Geez..."
"I had to wake you up. You look like a pretzel sitting like that!" Lewis said.
"I feel like one, too!" I said, then shifted into sitting indian style. "What a night. Thanks for putting up with me."
"No problem... Hey, did that stuff wear off yet?" he said.
"I guess so, I actually forgot about it," I said.
"That's good," he said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because you didn't notice I'm sitting here in my shorts," Lewis said.
The End
{Btw, just wanted to end with a pleasant visual =)}
