Let's get going. You kids ready to see a movie? :)
Mick: Yeah! :D
Mike: M'cowgirl's gonna see her first drive-in flick. :D
(Katie burbles. :) )
Shelly: Yay! :D
Peter: I'm ready!
Davy: This is supposed to be a really fun movie. :)
Micky: I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! ;)
Lauren: Oh brother. :P ;)
(We begin on the road at night, about a month after "Return of the Clone." Micky and Lauren's purple Chevy Bel Air, Valerie's blue sportscar, and the MonkeeMobile drive past a 50s-space-age-y neon sign with the words "Malibu Beach Drive In" on it, followed by a marquee that says "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." The cars drive into a lot where other cars are parked in front of a still-blank screen. The others start to climb out as the camera shifts to the three cars parked in the middle of the lot.)
Mike: (Looks around as he climbs out) Good, we're early.
Micky: *crows* Best seats in the house! :D ;)
Emma: (Cuddles Katie, who giggles in her lap) What do you think, Miss Katie? You're going to see your first movie! :)
(Katie claps. :D)
Emma: Yay! (Claps along with Katie) We're going to see a very cute movie!
Micky: *turns around in his seat and looks back at the twins* You two rugrats ready for the movie?
*The twins cheer loudly.* :D
Lauren: *sticks a finger in an ear* I think they're ready. ;)
Davy: (Grins next to the twins) I've been DYIN' to see this movie! Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse wrote the music! :D
Peter: (Looks at Valerie) Are you sure a family outing was a good idea?
Valerie: After what happened last month and what I have...planned...for the coming months, I think we need some family time. :)
"Shelly: Wow, this is a weird-looking movie theater! It's all cars!"
"Mick: Yeah! I wonder if the floors out there are sticky like the floors in other theaters?" ;)
"Shelly: I hope they sell candy and popcorn! :D"
"Mick: Me, too! Maybe we'll actually get some this time, if Daddy doesn't eat it all. :P ;)"
"Shelly: We could ask Mommy to get some for just us. :D"
"Mick: *grins* I bet Daddy would still want some of it. ;) :P"
"Shelly: He can have his own. :p"
Mike: (Leans into the Micky's side of the Bel-Air) We're gonna go get some goodies before the flick starts. You guys wanna come with us?
Micky: Goodies...of course! :D ;)
Lauren: Mick! I'LL go with you guys. Mick, you stay HERE. ;) :P
Micky: *frowns* Awww... :( :P
Shelly: Poppy-corn! :)
Mike: Yeah, kids, Aunt Em wants popcorn, and Uncle Mike sure could use a soda. Katie's comin', too. Uncle Peter wants iced tea.
Lauren: *smiles at the twins* And I'll get you two popcorn of your own, so Daddy won't be snitching like he usually does when we see movies. ;)
*Micky sticks his tongue out.* ;)
Mike: (Opens the door) Come on, gang. Let's go. ;)
Emma: (Opens the door for the twins; Katie is in a stroller) Let's go get some snacks for the movie!
Peter: (As he and Valerie join them) It's very appropriate, too. This movie is about candy and kids! :)
*The twins pile out, as Lauren comes around the car.*
Lauren: *reaches out for the twins* Hands, please. *each takes a hand, grinning*
(The group walks to the edge of the drive-in, where a long, neon-and-metal-trimmed building houses the snack counter. They get into the line and the twins start to look around.)
"Shelly: Wow, Mick, this isn't a normal movie theater at all! There's no seats! :o"
"Mick: Just cars! It's really different! :D"
"Shelly: There's no lobby, either. All the cars just drive right in!"
"Mick: It's really neat! I like this better than the other theaters!"
"Shelly: Me too! It's bigger, you can get out and walk around without your mommy yelling at you, and you can sit on your car if you can't see the movie! :D"
"Mick: I can't wait to see the movie, too!"
"Shelly: Unca Peter says it's about kids and candy, and Unca Davy says there's great music! :D"
"Mick: Sounds like a great movie to me! ;)"
"Shelly: Me too! I hope it starts soon! :D"
(We finally see the group walking back to the three cars. Mike carries two sodas and a box of Raisinets. Emma has a large box of popcorn on the back of Katie's stroller. Peter has popcorn and a large iced tea. Valerie has a soda and a huge box of Sno-Caps.)
*Lauren carries two boxes of popcor, one for Micky and one smaller one for the twins, and two sodas.*
(Davy just has a small soda and a small box of popcorn.)
Davy: I've already heard some of the music. It's groovy, man. Newley and Bricusse do great stuff. I used to sing their "Gonna Build a Mountain" when I was first looking for jobs in LA. :)
Shelly: Music! :)
Mick: Singing! :)
Mike: Ain't my kinda thing, but I heard Gene Wilder's a good Willy Wonka.
Shelly: Willy Wonka?
Emma: (Smiles) He's the candy factory's rather strange owner. I've read both of Road Dahl’s "Charlie" books. :)
Micky: *turns to Davy* "Gonna Build A Mountain?" Doesn't that song mention something about soap, or... *gets slugged by Lauren; grins* ;) :P
Davy: I can't remember ALL the lyrics now! :p ;)
*Micky chuckles. Lauren rolls her eyes.* :P
(Everyone returns to the cars, where Micky drums his fingers impatiently on the side.)
Micky: What took you guys so long? I'd have been back ages ago! :P ;)
Lauren: Except that you'd be as empty-handed as when you left. *slides in next to him*
Mike: Yeah, Mick, we actually want to eat this stuff. ;)
Micky: Funny. *takes his box of popcorn and soda and begins to munch* :P
Davy: (Slides in with his food) Mick, why don't you wait for the movie to start?
Micky: *swallows* Why? I've already got the popcorn in front of me. No sense in waiting.
*Lauren shakes her head and pulls out two sippy cups for the twins. She turns around in her seat and hands them back to Davy to give the kids.*
(Davy gives each twin a cup.)
"Shelly: Oooh, here's mine! Mine's purple with flowers on it! :D"
"Mick: *grins* And mine. Mine's bright red with a smiley face on it! :D"
Shelly: Poppy-corn?
Mick: *holds up their box* Poppy-corn! :)
Shelly: (Takes one and puts it in her mouth) Yummy! :D
"Shelly: I love popcorn, especially with lots of butter! :D"
"Mick: I love it, too! :D"
*Mick puts a handful in his mouth.* :D
"Shelly: Mick, you're getting it all over! :p"
Davy: 'Ey, little man, don't stuff so much in at once! You'll choke yourself like that! :p
"Mick: No, I'm not! Not as much as Daddy is! :P ;)"
"Shelly: Daddy's not back here! If you make a mess, Mommy will get mad! :p"
Mick: *points* Daddy does it! :P
Davy: You 'ave a smallah mouth.
*Micky stops mid-chew, looking sheepish.* :P
"Mick: I won't make a mess. :P"
"Shelly: (Brushes popcorn off of her overalls) You're already making a mess!"
"Mick: Ooops. Sorry, Shel. :("
Lauren: *turns around in her seat; grins* Just don't stain anything... *grin widens* And that goes for both of you, too, *glances* Mick and *glances* Dave. ;) :P
Micky: I'm being careful, babe! :P
Davy: I wouldn't dream of it, luv! ;)
Lauren: Good. ;)
"Shelly: Unca Davy makes messes sometimes, too!"
"Mick: Sometimes as big as Daddy's messes! ;)"
(Something on the screen flickers, then brightens. The first thing we see is an animated commercial for the food at the concession stand, complete with dancing hot dogs and French fries.)
"Shelly: Wow, did you see the hot dogs dance?"
"Mick: We should've asked for hot dogs! :D ;)"
Shelly: Hot doggies go! :D
Lauren: *smirks* What, no hot fudge sundae with legs? ;)
Micky: I am never gonna live that down. :P
"Shelly: Hot fudge sundaes have legs? /:)"
"Mick: I didn't know they had legs!"
(Next is a commercial for a Disney live-action movie, "The Barefoot Executive," with Heather North, Kurt Russell, and a chimpanzee who can apparently predict TV show ratings.)
Davy: (Frowns) That North girl looks familiah, but I can't quite place where I've seen 'er before...
(Next up is a cartoon, "Rabbit Fire," featuring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, and lots and lots of hunting season signs. ;) )
(The twins giggle in delight as they sip their sodas and watch the animated hunter and two animals.)
*Micky laughs right along with the twins.* ;)
"Shelly: They're so silly! Daffy ALWAYS gets mixed up, and then Elmer blows off his beak! ;) :D"
"Mick: Blam! :D ;)"
"Shelly: Did you see when Bugs dressed up like a girl hunter and Daffy was supposed to be her doggie? Elmer was really fooled for a few minutes! :)) :D"
"Mick: I can't believe Elmer fell for that! ;) :))"
(Then we finally come to the opening, an instrumental of "I've Got a Golden Ticket" over scenes of the productions of millions and millions of different kinds of chocolate candies.)
Shelly: Look! Candy! :D
Mick: Candy! Yummy! :D
Davy: Hey, you rugrats want to go visit everyone else and see how they're doing? :)
Mick: Okay! :)
Lauren: Just stay close to the cars. :)
Shelly: Go! :)
Davy: We will. Come on, kids. You can bring your popcorn. :)
Lauren: Meanwhile, I'll mop up Micky. ;)
Micky: I am NOT drooling, babe! :P ;)
(As Davy chuckles and helps the twins out of the car, the chocolate sequence segways into an opening number with kids running around an old-fashioned candy store, while it's proprietor sings "The Candy Man" and talks about Willy Wonka and his amazing treats.)
"Shelly: (Looks up...and up...at the movie screen) Wow, that screen is BIG! It's bigger than the movie theater we usually go to! :o"
"Mick: *nods* It's huge! I feel like I'll fall over looking all the way to the top of it! ;)"
"Shelly: I wonder what it would be like to go to the very top of it? We'd be able to see everything in Malibu Beach! :D"
"Mick: That'd be fun! :D"
Shelly: (Points to the movie screen) Up, Unca Davy!
Davy: (Looks up...and up...at the screen) Yeah, that is pretty high, isn't it, Shel?
Shelly: We go up! :D
Mick: Want up! :D
Davy: Sorry, kiddies. You can't go back there. The screen wouldn't hold you two, and it's way too high for you. It's for showin' movies, not climbin'.
Shelly: Awww! :p
*Mick sticks his tongue out.* :P
"Shelly: There's got to be a way to get to the very top!"
"Mick: There has to be! I bet we could find it!"
(Davy brings the twins over to the MonkeeMobile, where Mike and Emma sit with Katie on Emma's lap. Mike is sipping soda. Emma is playing with Katie, who plays with a little stuffed bear in a calico and lace-trimmed dress.)
Davy: Hi, guys. We thought we'd go out for some air and to see the sights. :)
Emma: Hi, guys. Say 'hi' to your friends the twins, Katie! :)
(Katie waves; Emma waves, too. :) )
Mick: *waves* Hi, Katie! :)
(Katie burbles and throws the bear, then rolls over on her mother’s lap and tries to crawl over to her father.)
Mike: Whoa there, little cowgirl! This ain't for you! ;)
Shelly: Katie go! :D
Emma: Katie, come back! (Gently pulls the baby into her lap)
Mick: Katie back. :)
Mike: That's m'cowgirl. She's just go, go, go these days. All she wants to do is roll over and work on her crawlin’. :D
Emma: She's getting better at crawling. :)
Mike: She wants to try everythin'. New stuff don't faze her a bit. :D
Shelly: (Holds out her popcorn box) Poppy-corn, Katie?
Emma: (Shakes her head) Thanks, Shel, but no popcorn. She's too little. It'll get stuck in her throat and choke her. I brought some baby cookies and Cheerios for her. :)
Mick: Awe. *grins* More for us! :D ;)
(Katie tries to reach for the box anyway, but Emma pulls her back.)
Emma: Katie, did you hear what I just said? No popcorn!
Shelly: Aw! Poor Katie! :(
Emma: It'll be a while before she can have popcorn.
Mike: Dave, don't forget about the rehearsal for our Club Cassandra gig tomorrow.
Davy: As if you'd let us forget it! This is the longest gig we've 'ad since leavin' the Club Fairview. :D
Mike: Yeah, and it's been goin' real well, too. I thought I might even have seen some record producers there yesterday. Shame tomorrow's the last night, though.
Davy: We'll find another gig, Mike. Don't worry. :)
(Onscreen, a young boy is delivering newspapers past a dark, mysterious-looking factory. He stands there, wondering about it and the mysterious Willy Wonka, when an old man stops him and warns him not to go in: "You dare not go hunting, for fear of little men.")
"Shelly: Little men? Like Unca Davy?"
"Mick: Maybe. *grins* Or maybe little GREEN men, like aliens! ;) :D"
"Shelly: What do aliens have to do with candy? :-/"
"Mick: *shrugs* I don't know. There’s always little green men in Daddy’s alien movies. ;) :P"
"Shelly: I hope this isn't scary! :o"
"Mick: Those movies aren't scary! I don't think this is, either."
Davy: I'm gonna take the twins to see Petah and Val and find out how that surprise of Val's is comin' along. ;)
Emma: Say 'bye-bye' to the twins, Katie! :)
(Katie waves again. :D)
Mike: Later, gang.
Shelly: (Waves) Bye-bye! :)
Mick: *waves* Bye! :)
(Davy takes the twins over to the smaller blue sportscar, where Peter and Valerie sit together, watching as the world errupts in a panic over the discovery of five "golden tickets" in Willy Wonka chocolate bars.)
Davy: (As Peter leans over to kiss Valerie) Are we missin' somethin? ;)
Peter: (Immediately takes his arm from around Valerie and zips up his pants; Val pulls her shirt back over her large form) Oh, um, nothing!
Shelly: Kiss! :X
Mick: Kissy! :D
"Shelly: He was gonna kiss her! :D :X"
"Mick: *nods* Yeah! :D"
Peter: Oh, man...
Valerie: We were, um, just watching the movie together. :">
Peter: (As they both blush so red, they're visible in the darkness) Yeah. We were getting close to each other for body heat. :">
Shelly: Body heat?
Davy: (Grins) Uh-huh. Yeah, sure you were. (Winks) ;)
*Mick: I think it looked more like what Mommy and Daddy like to do when they think we aren't looking. ;) :x"
"Shelly: But how would they wrestle in the car? Auntie Valerie's car is pretty small! :p"
"Mick: *shrugs* Lots of practice? ;)"
Davy: 'Ey, Val, 'ow's the big surprise comin'?
Valerie: It's finished! I have to finalize a few things in the city tomorrow, but that's it. I'll be around with big news tomorrow afternoon! :D
Davy: That's great! :)
Peter: I can't wait to find out what you've been doing all this time. :)
Valerie: Trust me, Peter, you'll love it. You all will. :)
Davy: Petah, Mike called a rehearsal for tomorrow.
Peter: (Nods) I know. We talked about it earlier.
Davy: Are we going to try some of the newer stuff Mick got off a bunch of 'is buddies?
Peter: I don't know. It's really up to Mike, I guess.
Davy: If it were up to 'im, we'd do nothin' but 'is stuff.
Peter: Mike writes good songs!
Davy: We all do, Pete, but 'e tends to forget that. :p
Valerie: Why don't you talk to him? Maybe you could get some changes made.
Peter: I would like to play some of my songs.
(Valerie just sighs and settles back. Shelly pats her tummy.)
Shelly: Baby. :D
Valerie: (Nods) That's right, Shelly. In a few months, Aunt Valerie and Uncle Peter are going to have a baby. :)
Shelly: Yay! :D
Mick: *claps* Yay! :D
Peter: He's going to be a little boy, like Mick. :)
Davy: But quieter, I 'ope, more like 'IS daddy. ;)
Mick: Boy! :D
"Shelly: There you go, Mick, a friend for you! You'll have a boy to teach how to race cars and knock over blocks! :)"
"Mick: I can't wait! It'll be nice to have another boy around. :)"
Valerie: (Sighs dreamily) It'll be WONDERFUL to have my own child. I love Chrissy, but this...
Peter: He comes from love, Valerie. He'll know that. He'll ALWAYS know that. :)
Davy: So, when's it due?
Valerie: (Sighs) June. :X
Peter: Not long before our anniversary. :)
Davy: Sounds real nice.
(Davy turns to the twins, who are standing next to the car.)
Davy: Now you two 'old on. I'm gonna talk to Uncle Peter 'bout Aunt Daphne and me gettin' married. It'll only be a minute.
Mick: *nods* Okay! :)
"Shelly: What's gettin' married?"
"Mick: I'm not sure, but I know that Mommy and Daddy are that! :D"
"Shelly: Auntie Em and Unca Mike and Auntie Valerie and Unca Peter are, too!"
"Mick: Yeah!"
"Shelly: Is Katie married?"
"Mick: I don't think Katie is."
"Shelly: (Looks at Micky) Are we? We wrestle sometimes!"
"Mick: *makes a face* I don't THINK we are. I think Daddy said it has something to do with a different kind of wrestling from what you and me do. Daddy told me that after they realized I wasn't asleep. ;)"
"Shelly: How come they only wrestle when we're asleep? Maybe they don't want us to do it? :p"
"Mick: Maybe. Daddy's face was really red when he told me. ;)"
"Shelly: I guess it made him feel funny, like when he gets teased."
"Mick: I guess so. :P"
"Shelly: (Makes a face as Davy chatters to Peter) This is boring! I want to go to the top of the movie screen and see all of Malibu Beach!"
"Mick: Yeah, me, too! Lets see if we can find how to get up there!"
"Shelly: What about Unca Davy and Unca Peter? (Nods at the two young men talking in the convertible)"
"Mick: We won't be gone long. They won't even know we're gone, and we'll be back before they even look for us."
"Shelly: Ok, Mick, let's go! :)"
"Mick: Yeah! :D"
(The pair toddle off, carrying their popcorn, as we see the first golden ticket winner in the background, a huge German boy, Augustus Gloomp, and his even larger parents.)
"Shelly: (Indicates the screen) Wow, he's big! No wonder he found a ticket! He must have eated a lot of candy bars! :o"
"Mick: I'm surprised he only found one ticket! ;)"
"Shelly: (Looks around) I wonder how we can get around all of the cars and find the screen, so we can climb it and see the top?"
"Mick: *grins* We could try that blue light thing again. ;)"
"Shelly: That's a good idea! It worked when we helped Daddy a few weeks ago! :D"
"Mick: Let’s try it! :D"
*The twins close their eyes and concentrate. A really brief bright blue light envelopes them. They disappear and reappear behind the screen, instead of at the top.*
"Mick: Aw, we didn't make it to the top! :P"
"Shelly: (Frowns) There's nothing back here but us! (Puts a hand on the screen) It's just rough fabric, like on Daddy's drums! :p"
"Mick: *puts a hand on the screen also* Oooh, yeah, it is like on Daddy's drums! *pulls his hand away and notices a shadow* Hey, Shell, this would be great for making shadow puppets! :D "
"Shelly: Ooooh, cool! Look! (Puts up a hand) Here's a piggy! Oink! Oink! :D"
"Mick: *laughs* I'll make a duckie! *puts up a hand* Quack, quack! :D"
"Shelly: (Makes her piggy go to Mick's duck) "Hi, Daffy!" ;) :D"
"Mick: *turns his hands to "face" Shelly's pig* "Hi, Porky!" ;) :D"
"Shelly: Let's go see Marvin the Martian and save Planet X! ;) :D"
"Mick: Yeah! I wanna see if we can run into the Red Monster on our way! ;) :D"
(The kids make their shadow "animals" walk away as two flashlights are seen in the darkness.)
"Shelly: (Points at the policemen) Yipes! Cops! :o"
"Mick: Oh no! Quick, Shel, hide! :O"
"Shelly: Let's use the blue-light again!"
"Mick: Okay!"
(There's two small blue lights, and the kids vanish as "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" begins. The two security officers appear, scratching their heads. There were complaints about seeing two little silohettes behind the screen, but there's nothing now. They shrug and walk away.)
(The twins appear by the concession stand. Mick waves towards the back, where the rows and rows of candy are. :D)
*Mick grabs Shelly's hand and pulls her closer to the candy.* ;)
"The twins duck under legs and around people. Shelly steps back, a bit afraid, but Micky goes right for the candy shelves as the cashier hands out candy and popcorn to a young couple.)
*Mick grabs a few small candies, then blue lights in some change to pay for the candies and leaves it on the shelf. He brings them out and gives some to Shelly.* :)
(Shelly grins and hugs her brother, then nibbles on the candies. That's when they look up...and see the cashier shaking her finger and scolding them. She reaches for them and the candy to take them back to their parents.)
*But they once again close their eyes and blue light themselves away.*
(This time, they're next to a car full of teenagers. Some sit in the car, kissing. Others sit on the roof or the hood, chatting and teasing and paying more attention to each other than the movie. One boy is pretending to play the sax...and actually sounds pretty good. ;) )
(Shelly points to a rather...attentative...couple in the car who are on top of each other and makes a face. :p)
*Mick matches the face and sticks out his tongue. He then points at the boy pretending to play the sax and grins.* :D
(Shelly goes up to the boy and taps him on the leg. He nods at her and begins to play along with "A Little Bit Me." ;) :) )
*The twins happily clap along.* :D
(Some of the teenagers dance along; others continue to chatter.)
(A larger teenager and with a girl on his arm and a box of popcorn in his hand storms up, obviously not happy. He indicates the sax and the car. The kid playing the "sax" blows sour notes in his face; the others laugh at him. He takes a swing at one boy, but the boy is smart enough to duck. Another boy stuffs his popcorn in his mouth and dumps the bucket on his head while the girls hold off his sweetheart.)
(Shelly ducks behind Mick and away from flailing arms and legs. More kids are joining the fight, and security guards are coming in, too.)
*Mick closes his eyes and concentrates. They disappear again, just as a couple of scuffling teenagers take over where the kids were.* :P
(As "A Little Bit Me" ends, the twins arrive in a small, dark room filled with shelves of large film cannisters. An old man sits by a small window in front, operating the camera.)
