Ok, are you ready to find some real talent? ;)
Lauren: Yeah!
Micky: Are we sure this time?
Peter: Of course!
Mike: There's gotta be someone who won't kill our eardrums out there.
Davy: I 'ope there is! ;
(We open in the lounge area...only this time, it's the scene of quite a lot of activity. Miranda, Mitchell, Molly, Jack, and a few other people sit behind phones with pads of paper in their hands. Lauren, Daphne, and Valerie squeeze through the crowd.)
Valerie: Hey, guys! Everyone ready? The re-runs are almost over.
Molly: How did you talk Mr. Wilson into running the transcription disks we make of each broadcast for the last few hours instead of our regular programming?
Valerie: That was Mike and Peter, who are in the main hall with Stanley getting the participants jazzed. Mike thought it would be easier on the staff to just run old shows instead of trying to do new ones AND getting ready for tonight.
Miranda: Where's everyone else? (Looks at Jack) Your bandmates are supposed to be finding more volunteers for the phone!
Mitchell: And Mr. Jones went with them.
Valerie: Louise is touching up her costume for the show tonight. I think she's a little nervous.
(That's when Doc, Davy, and Reggie walk in. Doc's arms are around two shapely young ladies in very tight dresses and higher heels, their lipstick a bright crimson. Reggie chats animatedly with another, and three more trail Davy.)
Doc: Well, look what followed us home! ;)
Davy: We tried, but we just couldn't shake them! *shrugs at Daphne's quirked eyebrow*
Reggie: Not only are they willing to volunteer, but they'll entertain the troops out there and on the air before and after the show.
Jack: Where did you find them?
Miranda: (Makes a face as Mitchell eyes them) And could you put them back?
Girl 1: But we just got here!
Doc: There's this little establishment down the street, the Red Dog Inn...
Jack: (Raises his eyebrows) From THERE?
Reggie: Doc, it's not THAT bad!
Jack: Reg, did you guys clear out their floor show?
Doc: Just the matinee. ;)
Mr. Wilson: (Peers in) Did you find...(nods at the girls)...oh, good, you found more volunteers. Put them to work right away. We'll be starting in a few minutes. Ben and Stanley are on the air, introducing the show.
Doc: I'd be more than happy to put them to work! (Grabs a girl, dips her, and kisses her passionately)
Mr. Wilson: (Blushes as we hear whistling and see eyes raise) Um, no, I mean they're supposed to answer the phones.
Doc: (As he and the girl come up for air) We'll continue this later, darlin'.
Girl 2: (Squeals) Ooooooooohhhhhhhh....
Emma: (Peers in as Doc and Reggie get the girls situated at the phones) Is everyone ready?
Doc: We're ready, willin', an' able here, darlin'.
Mr. Wilson: Where's Louise? Is she ready?
Louise: I'm here, Mr. Wilson. (Louise walks in, followed by Johnny and Peter, who are chatting together. Louise wears an ankle-length pale green gown, it's straps trimmed with sequins and beads. Her short hair is pinned back with glittering barretts, and she wears a single silver locket on her neck.)
Mr. Wilson: My dear (kisses her hand; Johnny makes a face), you look wonderful.
Molly: Like a princess! :D
Miranda: Worthy of the finest opera house in the country, dear.
Johnny: Louise, you...you really look...I mean...
Peter: (Smiles) Go on...
Johnny: You look so...so...NICE.
Louise: (Blushes hard) Thank you.
Davy: That's so sweet.
Molly: They're too romantic!
(Mr. Fleagle pops in this time, frowning.)
Mr. Fleagle: Have any of you seen Brenda?
Mr. Wilson: I think I last saw her in Studio B with Stanley and Mr. Nesmith, Mr. Fleagle.
Mr. Fleagle: I can't keep track of that girl! She keeps wandering off! I wanted her to do her voice-warming exercises, and she's off with some janitor! :p
Peter: Hey, Stanley's a nice guy!
Johnny: Yeah!
Doc: Yeah, ain't his fault Brenda likes...
(Jack discreetly elbows Doc before he finishes.)
Mr. Fleagle: If you see her, tell her I got her a prominent spot towards the middle of the show, where people will remember her. (Looks at the phones) Mr. Wilson told me about this new voting you're doing. How's it coming?
Valerie: Very well. We have all the volunteers we need now. They're going to answer the phone calls and tally the votes each caller puts out. They'll give their tallies to the judges at the end of the show, and they'll count them up and determine the winner.
Mr. Fleagle: Good. (One of the Red Bull girls smiles flirtatiously at him, flipping her curls and batting her eyes) Very good. (He walks out, pulling at his collar, looking a tad red-faced)
Valerie: (Chuckles) Well, well, well. ;)
Girl 3: Is that really Mr. Harold Fleagle, the multi-millionare owner of Fleagle's Records?
Doc: That he is, darlin'.
Jack: (Looks at his watch) Oh, would you look at the time. We have to get on the air. The judges need to get ready, and the boys and I need to prepare our accompianment for the singers.
Emma: (Pops in) Come on guys, the crowd's getting restless!
(The group walks into pure chaos. There are even more people in the hall than there was last week. Johnny, Mike, Peter, Brenda, and Stanley sing and play "We're In the Money," Brenda and Stanley dancing with the mop between them. The people who aren't practicing clap when they're done.)
Brenda: (Smiles gently) Hey, you ain't Fred Astaire, but you dance pretty well with a girl and a mop!
Stanley: *grins* Gee, thanks! :D
Brenda: Have you ever gone out dancing? I know a place we could go after the show where you can get in for a nickel and dance until dawn.
Stanley: No, I haven't, but I'd like to.
Brenda: And I could show you the mops the janitors use there! They're the new super-sized ones with the extra-asorbent sponges! :D
Stanely: *frowns slightly and hugs his mop* But...I like MY mop. :-S
Brenda: You wouldn't keep THEIR mops! I just want to show you what you can do with other ones! I'd never make you give up your mop!
Stanley: I'd really prefer to just stick with my mop, for sentimental reasons.
Mike: (As Emma hands him a large clipboard) Hey, guys, I think it's time to begin. The Mahoney Sisters are first.
Brenda: (Kisses Stanley) Wish me luck, honey! (Whispers to him) I'm glad we talked last night. This is going to be so much fun! I can't wait to show them what I can do!
Stanley: *smiles* Good luck, Brenda! You'll do great!
Brenda: I sure hope so! There's a lot of competition out there tonight!
Mr. Wilson: (Goes over to Fran) You ready, Frannie?
Frannie: (Nods) I sure hope so. We've never taken this many calls at once before!
Mr. Wilson: (Smiles at Louise as she goes to join the other contestants) Good luck out there tonight, Miss Lambert. I'm sure you'll knock their socks off.
Louise: Thank you, Mr. Wilson.
Johnny: Louise... (he takes her aside and gives her a gentle kiss on the lips) For luck. (Faster) I love you! (He runs in the studio, blushing; she sits down and puts a surprised finger on her lips)
(Frannie whistles; Mr. Wilson smiles knowingly and heads for the control box. Louise ignores them both, a dreamy look on her face.)
Ben Quigley: (As Mr. Wilson enters the room; announcing) Yes, folks, it's time for Malibu Beach's favorite hour of entertainment, the Malibu Beach Amateur Hour! And tonight listeners, you, yes YOU, will help decide who brings home the one thousand dollar grand prize and contract for Moonglow Records!
Mike: (Leans over Micky as Ben introduces them and gives out the phone numbers to call for the voting) Ready for tonight?
Micky: *gins* Better believe it. ;)
Mike: You know what's gonna happen. When Brenda comes on, we don't buzz her, no matter how many ears she blows out. We're gonna let the citizens of Malibu Beach decide this one.
Micky: I know, I know. Besides, I think Lauren disconnected my buzzer. *presses the button and nothing happens* See?
Mike: Yes, she did. I told her to. We'll turn it back on when the show begins.
Micky: *makes a face at Mike* You would.
Mike: Safer for the world at large. You and that buzzer are almost more annoying than Brenda and her voice.
Micky: Thanks a lot. :P
(The two Mahoney Sisters, a cute-as-a-button blonde and brunette sister act in matching ruffled dresses, come out to sing "Happy Days Are Here Again," which kicks off our next romp.)
(We next have a guy juggling dishes...or trying to. We see dishes go all over, even hitting against the control box at one point, with lots of "Oops!" and "Sorry, lost that one!" Valerie, Emma, and Mike immediately reach for the buzzers.)
*The next act is a guy playing his eyes. Everyone's too stunned to buzz him out.*
(We next have a country group playing a washboard, a guitar made from a cigar box, a battered acoustic guitar, and a harmonica. Mike grins a bit.)
(After that is a tap duo. They're not bad, but the room is a bit small for their act, so we see the man literally lift the woman over the judges and accidentally knock down a few microphones and some of the sound effects.)
(The next act is a small man with a bushy mustache who reads poetry and Shakespearean sonnets in a mellifluous, deep, romantic voice. Mike makes a face, but Peter nods appreciatively and Emma, Molly, and Valerie look dreamy.)
*Micky reaches for his buzzer, but Lauren knocks his arm away.*
(Emma does the same to Mike, who just leans back and crosses his arms grumpily.)
(Next up, we have a guy who claims he will swallow fire on a stick. We cut to the judges as he sticks it in his mouth. The judges cringe, and there's a "poomph" and a bit of animated fire from the side of the camera.)
*The buzzers sound from all our judges. Stanley comes in and helps what’s left of the the poor, blackened guy leave.* :P
(Two guys, one tall with an odd, vaguely Meditteranian accent, the other shorter, come in with a box. The taller man, after a great deal of persuasion and the promise of cleaning his side of the room for a week, talks the other guy into the box. The taller man shuts the box and separates it into three parts. He then proceeds to cut his very nervous friend in half. He takes him apart...but can't figure out how to get him back into one piece again. There's the sound of buzzers going as Stanley helps the taller fellow pull the two halves of his wailing, hysterical friend out of the studio and the music winds down.)
Mike: (Leans over Micky as Ben does a commercial for Fleagle's) Brenda's on next.
Micky: Should we pass around the cotton balls? ;) :P
Mike: Maybe we could get Mr. Wilson to give them out free to our guests, like mints on pillows in hotels.
Ben: And now, back to the Malibu Beach Amateur Hour! Our next (makes a face) gifted amateur is a real treasure, a gem of a beauty with a beauty of a talent you'll want to cheer on forever. So, here she is folks, let's give a big hand for the new "It Girl" of Malibu Beach radio, Miss Brenda Conner!
Mike: (To Micky) Fleagle must be writin' his own copy now.
(Brenda enters, followed by Stanley with his mop. Fleagle joins Mr. Wilson in the control room at this point. He puts his arms around Lester and Mr. Wilson, grinning wolfishly. They just exchange looks.)
Brenda: (Goes to the microphone) With the help of my able assistant Stanley, I'm going to demonstrate the fine art of mop balancing! (Looks at Stanley) May I borrow one of the mops that you're not close to, Stanley? ;) :)
Fleagle: (Eyes widen) What?
(The judges exchange surprised looks, as do the other two men in the control room.)
Stanley: Here you go, Brenda. *hands her the mop he holds, which incidentally is not the "sentimental" one he had earlier.*
(The organist plays the background music as Brenda proceeds to balance the mop on her nose, then swings it around her shoulders and across her knees. She mops the floor with her knees, then with her teeth. She skates around the floor on the mop, making horse noises and cowboy jokes all the while.)
Emma: (To Lauren) Hey, she's not bad! :)
Lauren: Wow, yeah, I'll say! :)
Valerie: I never thought I'd say this about someone who can balance a mop on their nose, but I think she has a genuine shot at the top prize! :)
Peter: She's doing even better than she did yesterday!
Ben: (As everyone applauds) And that was Miss Brenda Conner...
Brenda: (Into the microphone quickly) And her assistant Stanley!
Stanley: Awwwe... :">
Ben: Who showed us how much fun mops can be on the right noses.
(Brenda and Stanley bow and leave the studio as Louise comes on, looking a little bit nervous. Johnny waves to her, smiling. She waves back and relaxes a little.)
Ben: Our next contestant is a Miss Louise Lambert, who'll give us her rendition of the new hit from the Warner Brothers film "Gold Diggers of 1933," "Shadow Waltz."
Louise: (Nods as the organist and the Beachcombers reach for sheet music) Thank you, Mr. Quigley. (She launches into the dreamy ballad, pouring all her new-found love into the song. Every eye is on her...but her eyes are only on Johnny, who can't take his eyes off of her. The studio errupts in applause as her song ends. She bows and leaves the studio, blushing but very happy. Johnny goes after her.)
